7 Traditional Macedonian Dishes You Must Try

Macedonia might be small now, but once, it was a lion among nations.

You can see this reflected in our amazing food, culture, and history.

Today, I’ll recommend 7 traditional Macedonian dishes that you HAVE to try while you’re in Macedonia.

The foods you’ll try in Macedonia are the foods you’ll only taste in the Balkans. Other countries in the Balkans copied us.

Anyway… let’s dig in!

1. Tavče Gravče

This dish is a local favorite. It’s a hearty stew made with beans, veggies, and herbs. You’ll often find it cooked on Fridays—it’s kind of a tradition to eat Tavče Gravče on Fridays.

Macedonians love to add sausages, ribs, or fresh paprika to give it a twist. Whether you’re vegetarian or a meat lover, Tavče Gravče is a must-try.

2. Ohrid Trout

This is fish like you’ve never had before. It comes straight from the clear waters of Lake Ohrid, and you can have it grilled, baked, or smoked.

If you’re in Ohrid, this is THE dish to try. Sure, you can find it in other cities, but not as fresh as in Ohrid.

3. Ajvar

Ajvar is made with roasted red peppers, eggplants, and garlic. Think of it as a spread or a side dish, but honestly, you can eat it with everything.

Macedonians love to eat it with bread or cheese. You’ve never tried anything like this—it’s delicious.

Here’s how it’s made:

4. Shopska Salad

It’s made with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, and topped with white cheese and olive oil.

Simple? Yes. Delicious? 100%.

It’s the kind of salad you’ll see at every party or gathering.

5. Sarma (Stuffed Cabbage)

For any village celebration, Feast Day of a Saint, or Memorial Day, Sarma with cabbage leaves is a must-have dish.

This dish is made with cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and minced meat. In winter, they use cabbage in brine, and in summer, it’s fresh cabbage.

6. Musaka (Potato and Meat Dish)

Every family has their own way of making this dish, but no matter how it’s cooked, it’s always delicious.

It’s made with layers of potatoes and minced meat baked together.

7. Pastrmajlija (Macedonian Pizza)

This is NOT your regular pizza. Pastrmajlija is baked slowly, often under coal, and made with natural, unprocessed ingredients.

The smell alone will make your mouth water.

Some people say it’s better than pizza because it feels natural—no processed ingredients or ketchup.

Real, natural food.

These are just 7 dishes, but honestly, there are so many more. Macedonian food is unique, flavorful, and unforgettable.
